(Hehe I apologise for the annoying "The Nightmare before Christmas" music, it lasts for 2:58 and is set on loop so if it starts to do your head in I advise you to turn your speakers off xD)
One of the most well known creatures in Gaelic folklore is the water demon or Kelpie. There are several variations.
Kelpies were normally considered to be the guardian spirits of certain rivers, lochs and pools. They usually take the form of a horse, most often thought to be black but also "green as glass" with a jet black mane and tail or beautiful and white.
The Kelpie can also take the form of a human(which would explain why I don't get chucked out every time I go to the cinema:) ), but always has something of the water which gives it away-like waterweed in its hair(I do an inspection before I leave the house). In its horse form it might wait near a ford to tempt a weary traveller to ride it across the river. It might have looked like a gentle pony, but anyone foolish enough to mount it would be carried off into the river and drowned and in some stories even devoured.
Male Kelpies were also well known for taking the form of a handsome young man and stealing away young girls to take as wives, never to see their families again.
The female Kelpie would often take the form of a human woman and in this instance was referred to as a water wraith and is most often seen clothed in a green dress. She is just as treacherous as a male Kelpie. It is said that when a human is attracted to a Kelpie and enters their presence from that moment on they will have disturbing problems in their life(wow so thats why my last boyfriend is such a failure :S).
There was one way in which a Kelpie could be defeated and tamed; the Kelpie's power of shape shifting was said to reside in its bridle, and anybody who could possess such a bridle could force the Kelpie to submit to their will(no my secret, I'm ruined! Now I'll have to do the domestic household tasks x(! ). A Kelpie in subjugation was highly prized, it had the strength of at least 10 horses and the endurance of many more, but the fairy races were always dangerous captives especially those as malignant as the Kelpie(Hey! I'm not malignant..(shifty eyes) ).
Wow! a book about moi?! You shouldn't have Frances!
Personally I don't think we're all bad. Look at how the watery horses saved Frodo and Arwen in Lord of the Rings!
